Holland is a country with a lot of water. That also means lots of fishing and Volendam is a traditional fishers town. With its small houses at the water side, it gives a good idea how Holland looked like in the old days. Of course there are lots of souvenir shops, with a few extras. For example the cheese factory, where you can see how cheese is made and a small wooden shoe shop, with a small workshop area. And then you shouldn’t miss the photo stores. Not to develop photos, but to make pictures of you and your loved ones in traditional Volendammer cloths. In the shop window you can see what it will look like and maybe find a celebrity on one of the pictures.
Of course there’s a big choice of fish in the restaurants. Most traditional is the ‘haring’, but there’s lots of other specialties as well. Just ask for tips, they will love to tell you what’s fresh that day.
